The Greco-Roman Theatre in Almuñécar 2026 returns to El Majuelo Park with the 18th edition of the “Sexi Firmum Iulium” Greco-Roman Theatre Festival, one of the main cultural events on the Costa Tropical. Almuñécar has a strong connection with Antiquity and its past as Sexi Firmum Iulium, the Roman city that forms an important part of the town’s history. For five nights, classical theatre will come back to life in a unique setting, combining history, heritage, culture and the Mediterranean. 🏺✨
From 2 to 6 September 2026, the Sexi Firmum Iulium Festival will bring five theatrical productions to Almuñécar, inspired by the great classics of Ancient Greece. This year’s edition also includes an important new feature: the participation of local theatre companies, sharing the programme with professional productions linked to the International Festival of Classical Theatre of Mérida. Euripides, Aristophanes and great characters from classical mythology will take centre stage in a festival designed to enjoy theatre under the stars. 🌙🎭
1️⃣ Wednesday, 2 September — Medea
🎭 Elenco Teatro | Almuñécar
The local company opens the festival with Euripides’ famous tragedy, a story of love, betrayal and revenge that continues to move audiences centuries later.
2️⃣ Thursday, 3 September — The Thesmophoriazusae
🎭 Segundo Acto Teatro | Almuñécar
Aristophanes’ comedy takes the stage with another local theatre company, bringing humour, satire and a playful perspective on the classical world.
3️⃣ Friday, 4 September — Jason and the Furies
🎭 Teatro del Noctámbulo
The myths of Jason arrive at El Majuelo in this professional production, forming part of the festival’s 2026 programme.
4️⃣ Saturday, 5 September — Phaedra in the Underworld
🎭 Lidia Bosch, Julio Peña and Alejandro Albarracín
One of the highlights of this year’s festival, arriving in Almuñécar just a few weeks after its premiere in Mérida.
5️⃣ Sunday, 6 September — Antigone, the Cursed Lineage
🎭 Atalaya Teatro | Ricardo Iniesta
The tragedy of Antigone will bring the festival to a close with a new production by Atalaya Teatro, directed by Ricardo Iniesta. 🏛️
