Throughout Spain and part of South America the Virgen del Carmen is the patron saint of the sea, sailors and fishermen, so in the very seafaring and coastal town of La Herradura, a Mediterranean paradise on the Costa Tropical of Granada, the days leading up to the feast day of the Virgen del Carmen are a festive time of great joy for all its inhabitants.
Which spreads to all visitors to the town, July 16th is the middle of summer and therefore La Herradura is the time of the year when it receives the most visitors, although as we have already pointed out more than once in Discover Almuñécar, La Herradura is a paradise because of its climate, its sea breeze and its people all year round.
Although the big day of the celebrations in honour of the Virgen del Carmen is the 16th of July, during the previous days you can enjoy the festive atmosphere and numerous activities focused on the celebration of the day of the patron saint of the Sea.
From the 12th you can enjoy concerts of all types and for all audiences, foam parties, workshops and many more surprises that the Town Hall, shops, establishments and other inhabitants of La Herradura have prepared.
The most important day, as we have already mentioned, is always the 16th of July, which this year falls on a Saturday and after two years of restrictions due to the pandemic, this date was and is very much awaited.
There will be a Holy Mass in honour of the Virgen del Carmen with the participation of the Bahia de La Herradura Choir, as well as a maritime procession of the image of the Virgin, if the tide permits, accompanied by the Marineras de la Asociación de Mujeres Siglo XXI, the Rociero Choir “Cosas Nuestras” and the Virgen del Carmen Association with performances in the Chiringuito Bambú and the Almuñécar Municipal Music Band.
Afterwards there will be a fireworks display on the beach of La Herradura and concerts in the Plaza de la Independencia.
The following day, Sunday 17th July, the celebrations will continue in the afternoon in the Plaza de la Independencia with circus workshops for all audiences and especially designed for the youngest members of the family, and a magic show.
